Overview

Introduced as the successor to the CRF250L, gaining a longer stroke for an extra 36cc, less weight, and improved ground clearance. It is arguably the most popular entry-level dual-sport in Australia today. It excels as a gentle trail explorer and urban commuter, but aggressive enduro riders quickly outrun the capability of the budget suspension.

Pros

  • Excellent reliability and smooth, linear power delivery
  • Slip-and-assist clutch makes lever pull incredibly light (great in traffic)
  • Low kerb weight and narrow profile inspire confidence off-road
  • Long service intervals for a dirt-capable bike

Cons

  • Suspension is severely undersprung for riders over 75kg
  • Small 7.8L fuel tank limits adventure touring range
  • Standard exhaust is heavy and heavily restricted for emissions

Known problems

medium
Dangerously soft rear shock
Built to a budget and sprung for a very light rider. A normal Australian adult will use up most of the suspension travel just sitting on the bike (excessive sag), causing it to easily bottom out on small trail bumps.
Fix: Replace the rear shock (YSS or Rally Raid are popular) and fit stiffer front fork springs.

Clutch slip under heavy load
The slip-and-assist clutch is great for light lever pull, but the springs are very soft. If ridden hard off-road in deep sand or mud, the clutch can begin to slip prematurely.
Fix: Fit heavy-duty aftermarket clutch springs (e.g., EBC) if taking it on serious trails.
