Z400 inspection checklist

It's the bike you think it is

• Look it up on your state register by its code, not its name ER400D or EX400G
• Victoria and Queensland list it by its Kawasaki code ER400D (QLD also has a plain "Z400" row).
• NSW files it under the Ninja 400's code EX400G, with the description "Z400 and ER400D", 2019-on, 399cc.
• It's on your state's LAMS list today (registers change) Look up a code · NSW · QLD · VIC

Every used bike

• Frame VIN and engine number match the registration papers
• PPSR check: no finance owing, not written off or stolen ppsr.gov.au ↗ (a few dollars, needs the VIN)
• Registration is current, and in the seller's name

Known faults to check for

• Check for: Clutch wear under aggressive or track use Shows up: 20k-40k km · Repair: $200-400
  What to look for

  Owner-reported: light-effort clutch springs, shared with the Ninja 400 on the same engine, are reported to wear a little earlier than average under hard use — revs flaring without a matching increase in road speed under acceleration.

This is a checklist, not a diagnosis. Anything that fails, or that you can't check, is worth a mechanic's pre-purchase inspection. Amber “unverified” tags mean we couldn't confirm that figure against a manufacturer source.
