Overview

The 2017 redesign gave the Ninja 650 a lighter trellis frame, slipper clutch, and standard ABS — and was sold in Australia in both full-power and LAMS-restricted form from the same dealership at the same RRP. The LAMS variant (sold as the 650L) uses the identical engine and chassis; the only restriction is a Torx screw on the throttle body that limits throttle travel. That screw takes roughly a minute to remove, which is both a selling point (easy upgrade off LAMS) and a buyer's risk (easy to hide). The 2020 model year received a substantial facelift — new twin LED headlamps, TFT display, revised fairing — and is treated here as the start of a separate generation. The ER650 covers 2017-2019.

Fairing vibration and buzz
Panel resonance through the fairing is a well-documented characteristic of the Ninja 650 across multiple generations. At certain RPM bands (typically 4,000-8,000rpm) the fairings vibrate against their mounts, producing a buzz felt at the handlebars and bars. Kawasaki addressed it with a foam-pad service procedure but many owners found the improvement minor.
Fix: Self-adhesive foam tape between fairing panels and their mounting points. Many used bikes have already had this done; check whether the fix is present and whether it has helped.

649cc parallel twin (Ninja 650L, LAMS) LAMS approved

Sold as the Ninja 650L. Unlike the MT-07LA this is the same 649cc engine as the full-power bike, restricted by a Torx screw on the throttle plate that limits throttle travel — a mechanical stop, not an ECU map, on Australian models. 649cc is under the 660cc cap, and the restriction brings it under 150kW/tonne. Verify on your state's current list before buying.

Pros

Throttle stop removed — derestricted bike sold as LAMS
The Torx throttle stop screw can be removed in under a minute and leaves no obvious sign. A derestricted 650L is not legally LAMS-compliant, so riding it on a learner or provisional licence is an unlicensed-riding offence, voids insurance, and can result in vehicle impoundment. The full-power bike and the 650L look identical, so visual inspection is not sufficient.
Fix: Inspect the throttle body before purchase and confirm the throttle stop screw is present. Have a Kawasaki dealer verify LAMS compliance and get it in writing. Do not rely on seller description or on the 'L' suffix alone.

Derestricting it legally costs far more than removing the screw
The screw comes out in a minute, which is why riders assume moving to full power is free. Legally it is not: the bike has to be deregistered, re-complianced as the unrestricted model, roadworthied and re-registered. Dealers who do the mechanical work will commonly note on the invoice that the modification is illegal without that process. For most owners the sums say sell the 650L to another learner and buy a full-power bike outright.
Fix: Budget on selling rather than converting. If you do want to convert, price the recompliance before buying the LAMS bike, not after.

Regulator/rectifier and stator failure
The OEM shunt-type regulator keeps the stator loaded near maximum whenever the engine is running, generating excess heat. Over time this degrades the stator windings and can cause the regulator/rectifier to fail. Symptoms are a battery that stops holding charge, flickering lights at idle, and eventually a no-start. On the ER650 platform this is the single most-reported electrical failure, and the stator and rectifier often fail together.
Fix: Replace both units together. Aftermarket MOSFET-type regulators (SH775-type or equivalent) run cooler than the OEM shunt unit and are the common upgrade. Parts from ~$150 aftermarket to ~$500 OEM, plus labour if not DIY.

Underdamped suspension from factory
The front forks are non-adjustable and softly sprung; the rear shock has preload adjustment only. Under hard braking the front dives noticeably, and at pace over undulations the rear can wallow. This is a design cost decision common to Kawasaki's middleweight range and applies equally to both LAMS and full-power bikes. It is most apparent when loaded with a pillion or luggage, which the bike is frequently used for.
Fix: Fork spring replacement and heavier oil is the cheap first step. A replacement rear shock (Hagon, YSS, Hyperpro) transforms the rear. Many used examples have already been improved; a bike with aftermarket suspension is worth more, not less.
